Why Did Corrosion and Nesting Bees Lead to the Development of Our Protective Sleeve? Why did corrosion of the regulator’s internal mechanism and nesting bees lead to the development of our PT-C-180 Protective Sleeve?
PT-C-180 Protective Sleeve
By design, a regulator’s bonnet features a ‘key slot’ opening which is necessary for the correct operation of its adjusting mechanism. Consequently, this opening leaves the internal components exposed to external conditions - in certain environments this can be particularly problematic. In offshore and other locations close to the sea, the salt content in the air is high which can potentially result in a crystal build-up on the adjusting screw and accelerate corrosion of the loading spring. In one instance we were also told of bees building a nest inside the regulator!
This meant that we needed to design something that could not only close the slot, but was simple in application, reusable, long-lasting and, ideally, environmentally-friendly.
Our senior design engineer, Karol Wolniewicz, is a keen scuba diver and used his experience to explore the option of utilising a rubber sleeve to create a ‘dry seal’ between the bonnet and band. Initially we experimented with trialling heat shrink tubes and sections of dry suit cuffs to test which gave better results. The heat shrink didn’t perform sufficiently and also wasn’t reusable. The dry suit cuffs, however, seemed perfect for the application.
We successfully located a manufacturer who was able to supply them to our specification, allowing us to offer our PT-C-180 Protective Sleeve to customers across the world and prevent those issues that were first identified in some of the more challenging environments from happening.
Our Protective Sleeve meets all of the criteria we initially set out to achieve; it offers excellent ozone, UV and chemical resistance in a range of temperatures from as low as -50°C right up to +1
10°C, and is 100% recyclable.

Our Managing Director, Steve Yorke-Robinson, has covered a fair few miles traveling to Adipec 2017 last month and then onto Singapore and China to visit some of our customers in the region.
Back at the Pressure Tech facility in Glossop, near Manchester, we have been working hard on developing new products, getting some interesting products through the workshop and adding new machinery to our manufacturing facility that has automated our inspection and measuring equipment.

In-House Manufacturing Capacity Increases with £135,000 Investment Our new Citizen L32 Sliding Head Machine is now fully up and running, increasing our in-house manufacturing capacity. Capable of handling up to 32mm bar diameter, the Citizen L32 is precise and fast - in fact it is an improvement in machine times of up to 75% over our existing Quest Sliding Head Machine.
With the additional in-house manufacturing capacity, we are able to leave both machines running longer to complete bigger batch runs. The overall purpose of this significant investment is to improve our delivery times, which we are hoping to see take effect over the comings weeks and months.

Steve Yorke-Robinson Presents at Hydrogen Fuel Cell Exhibition Day 4 at the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Exhibition saw Pressure Tech Managing Director Steve Yorke-Robinson take to the stage in the Technical Forum.
Steve took the opportunity to tell the audience about pressure regulator selection for the Hydrogen Fuel Cell market. Discussing decaying inlet pressures and the merits of both two-stage regulators and of a balanced main valve design, Steve showcased our new compact and economical piston-sensed regulator.

TS-311 tested to extreme climate conditions for H2 analyser application Two major orders have been secured for a range of regulators for use on analyser projects in Saudi Arabia and Russia, where ambient temperature conditions couldn't be more extreme. Both projects required over 200 units of our TS-311 two stage regulator, specially developed for use on Hydrogen service. The Russian project involves operating conditions down to -55 deg C (-67 deg F) and the TS-311 was thoroughly tested at these extremes on Helium service using a TAS climate chamber capable of reaching as low at -70 deg C (-94 deg F).

OSEA 2016 Pressure Tech are attending OSEA 2016 and supporting their local 'Authorised Reseller', Sea & Land Technology on booth.1B5-6. The primary focus is on the brass range of pressure regulators for the diving industry and hydraulic regulators for hydraulic wellhead control systems, but Managing Director, Steve Yorke-Robinson will on the stand all week to discuss latest product designs, including unique flanged pressure regulators specifically developed for projects with Chevron and Saudi Aramco, which are generating a lot of interest in the gas analyser sector.
Pressure Tech awarded 98% in recent Supplier Audit by Michell Instruments Pressure Tech Ltd are delighted to announce that Michell Instruments Ltd, a key customer, has awarded us 98% in a recent Supplier Audit, stating that "the audit results exceed the expectations of Michell Instruments Ltd".
Pressure Tech welcomed Andy Fox and Tracie Dawson from Michell to our factory on Wednesday 27th July, 2016. As a long-term supplier to Michell Instruments, we were pleased to show them our manufacturing facilities, quality procedures and corporate governance.
The purpose of the supplier audit was to ensure that:
1) Pressure Tech has the fundamental ability to provide the required service to Michell Instruments, from a technical and commercial perspective.
2) Pressure Tech has the appropriate level of understanding and commitment to meet the applicable regulatory and legislative requirements when trading with Michell Instruments.
3) Michell Instruments and Pressure Tech share similar views in areas such as corporate and social responsibilities, quality, supply chain management and risk management.
4) A thorough review of Pressure Tech’s Quality Management System (QMS).
A particular area of interest to Andy and Tracie concerned our new ISO Class 8 Clean Room and Oxygen Cleaning Service, which provides certified cleaning of components to ASTM G93 level C. We use this facility internally during manufacturing to customer requirements and offer this service on a sub-contract basis, including an oxygen cleaned certificate.

Michell reviewed our QMS, which is certified to ISO9001:2008 by DNV GL and also against ATEX Directive, and the additional requirements of EN ISO/IEC 80079-34 by CSA Sira. Michell were pleased to know that our range of electrically heated regulators are certified to the latest technical standards. Andy was especially interested in our Annual Management Review, describing it as ‘impressive’, further commenting generally that ‘Pressure Tech sets the benchmark for supplier standards’. Pressure Tech are working towards certification to ISO9001:2015 by June 2018 .
We are delighted with such positive feedback from Michell Instruments. Pressure Tech's LF690'Low Flow' Hydraulic Reducing Regulator features ceramic seating and a fully supported main valve for water glycol applications. The regulator is piston Sensed for outlet control to 1380bar / 20000psi.Ceramic Seating provides ultimate protection against the harsh use encountered on hydraulic services. The unique seating cartridge provides a dampening action on this critical component to prevent 'chattering' or 'unstable frequency resonance'. The regulator is self relieving with segregated captured vent to prevent deterioration to the loading mechanism and making the regulator cleaner to service. The seating area can easily be accessed from the base of the regulator for speedy servicing in situ.

Pressure Tech at Subsea Expo 2016 This February 3rd - 5th, Pressure Tech will be exhibiting at the Subsea Expo (AECC) in Aberdeen for the first time.
Pressure Tech is one of the industry’s leading manufacturers of pressure regulators. Over the last fifteen years, we have developed an extensive range of high quality brass and stainless steel regulators. Our success has been attributed to our focus on technology and innovative products, working closely with customers to design and manufacture a wealth of new products that provide accurate pressure control to systems. Designed to operate subsea at depths up to 3000m (10,000ft), these regulators can either use the external seawater pressure as a reference pressure or be completely sealed to operate at topside ambient pressure conditions, thus are completely unaffected by external pressure conditions. A version of the regulator is also available with a 'bucket handle' to allow subsea adjustment by ROVs.

Pressure Tech achieve ATEX / IECEx Certification for XHR300 Building on our current product certification, Pressure Tech is pleased to announce that we have now achieved ATEX/IECEx certification on our XHR300/XHR301 regulators.
The XHR series boasts a unique dual heating design with twin 100W inlet and outlet heating probes inserted directly into the flow path to help maintain saturated gases in their vaporised form. This gives the double benefit of reduced volume and improved heat transfer for the greatest possible efficiency. The new electronic controller also allows the power supply to be independently isolated to each heater.

Certification ensures that our regulators are fit for their intended purpose and that adequate information is supplied to ensure that they can be used safely.

The Inconel X750 diaphragm used on all our analyser product range lasts 150% longer than 316SS, proven to perform better due to its chemical and mechanical properties. The sealing area is recessed and protected inside the body of the regulator meaning the diaphragm is always centrally located.

We have many customers who require specialised services, in particular those who work in the commercial subsea diving sector and medical hyperbaric chambers. These organisations need specific cleaning services to ensure contaminants are avoided and eliminated where equipment is used in oxygen rich environments. As such, Pressure Tech has invested in a four stage solvent degreasing system to ensure parts are cleaned within the guidelines of ASTM G93. The cleaning process and subsequent assembly of products are all performed in our newly installed ISO8 clean room to ensure ultimate cleanliness levels are achieved.
As specialists in the production of high quality equipment within the commercial diving sector, we understand the importance of providing a clean room environment, which is certified to a low level of pollutants. Many of our customers require specific cleaning processes for equipment such as valves and regulators, particularly where high levels of Oxygen are present. The understanding of oxygen's reactivity has led to strict regulations regarding the cleanliness of equipment used in an oxygen service. Although Oxygen is not flammable itself, it supports combustion. The higher the oxygen content and/or pressure in a system, the more vigorous the potential combustion, so care must be taken to ensure equipment is free from contaminants such as hydrocarbon oils and greases, which oxidise with the Oxygen and can cause the source of ignition.
ASTM G93 is an industry recognised practice that provides a "selection of methods and apparatus for the cleaning of materials and equipment intended for service in oxygen enriched environments". Whilst Trichloroethylene was always recognised as the most effective means of cleaning parts to this standard, the health and environmental issues associated with "Trike" have led to the development on new alternative solvents such as Novec™ 71DE.
Parts are cleaned initially by immersing in the 71DE solvent at boiling point before being transferred to a further immersion in an ultrasonic tank and a final drying process in the vapour phase, ensuring all parts are cleaned and dry prior to use on Oxygen service.

Hydraulic Test Rig installed Pressure Tech have commissioned a new hydraulic test rig that provides flow rates to 10lpm (2GPM) with pressures up to 690bar (10,000psi). Hydrostatic tests can be performed up to 1380bar (20,000psi). The inclusion of a hyperbaric chamber allows subsea regulators to be tested to simulated sea depths of 3000m (10,000ft).
Patented High Flow Regulators Launched Pressure Tech are pleased to release details of a unique range of high flow pressure regulators that fit within the internal diameter of the pipework and provide excellent pressure reduction control on pipelines over 4" diameter. The patented design involves five components, of which only one is dynamic, and the overall size is typically 50% lighter than other typical pressure regulator designs.
The outlet pressure setpoint is controlled by an external pilot regulator which ensures typical droop effects are minimised under high flow conditions. Sizes range from Cv 63 for the 4" and Cv 260 for 8"

The XHR-300 boasts a unique dual heating design with twin 100W inlet and outlet heating probes inserted directly into the flow path to help maintain saturated gases in their vaporised form. This gives the double benefit of reduced volume and improved accuracy for the greatest possible efficiency.
Also for use in natural gas, oxygen and moisture sample systems, the XHS-300 is a more economical product, perfect for less critical applications. It utilises a single 100W heater cartridge in a specially designed spiral sheath to maximise heat transfer in the flow path and maintain sample gases in their vapour state. Depending on the application and space available, there are two entry options to minimise height where necessary.
The LF-300 is a single stage regulator with some truly unique features integrated into the design. Created with quality and reliability always to the forefront, and after extensive analysis and tests, the resulting fully supported Inconel X750 diaphragm lasts 50% longer than typical stainless steel designs, vastly cutting the cost and time of maintenance and replacement. It also features an innovative seat design which minimizes the risk of leakage caused by contamination.
